This One’s For THE Girl!

From our 1st dance, to the 1st poem she wrote me 6 years ago to being a strong career woman to now being a mother – She can do it all!

Most people who meet my wife quickly conclude that she is remarkable. They are right about this. She is smart, funny and thoroughly charming. Often, after hearing her speak at some function or working with her on a project, people will approach me and say something to the effect of, you know, I think the world of you, Barack, but your wife, wow!”Barack Obama, The Audacity of Hope

She looked awesome when she danced. I could see her jiving to the number Mambo Number 5. The guy dancing with her seemed to be constantly out of beat but she kept her poise. After a while she did the Cha Cha to another favourite song of mine Underneath the Mango Tree. I kept watching her during every dance wondering who this beauty was.

It was in RIPVINS Ballroom dance class, Mangalore that I first laid my eyes on her about 6 years ago. Tall, slender with a gorgeous face, this was what I had first observed about her. As I waited for my chance to practice a dance with her, I couldn’t help but stare as she sat there elegantly to take a break from the dancing. My eyes lingered for a fraction more than needed and so I had to quickly look away when she turned towards me. I finally gathered enough courage to ask her for a dance and realized by the end of it that her dancing matched her amazing looks! I guessed that she probably was either a dancer or a model by profession as she seemed to fit either of the two professions with ease. We all tend to form our opinions on first impressions, don’t we? That is why I was pleasantly surprised when I got to know that she was a doctor.

Days went by and I got to know more and more about her. From the initial impression of her being a beauty who could entice you with her graceful movements on the dance floor to knowing that she was friendly and spoke easily once she got to know the person. As fate would have it, we ended up working in the same hospital, though just briefly. While I was still confused as to which path to take for the future, she had chosen the profession of being a gynaecologist. So she had taken up the difficult task of trying to calm a screaming woman when she’s probably in the pain of her life during labour and then bring a new life into this world on a daily basis. So this dancing beauty was more than just that. She wasn’t just one of those glam doctors shown on Grey’s Anatomy or House MD. She had brains and courage! And not to forget sympathy for those women.

It was not long after that we started dating each other. Two people with similar likes and the same profession were bound to fall in love with each other at some point, me being a surgeon and she a gynaecologist. While I showered her with gifts that can be only termed as materialistic(We guys take pride in the gifts we BUY for our women), she chose to write me heart touching poems along with her share of gifts. Poems that really made you feel special. Though she never acknowledges the fact that she’s a good poet, I can assure you that she is.

Now while she looks after our 4 month old son with so much love and care, I can’t help but admire how she seems to fit into every role that life has given her so far. Its been 3 and half years since our marriage and it amazes me the ease with which she balances both her career and home. Words can’t describe as to what she has to do everyday. From being a passionate dancer and a part time poet with interests in crafts, to now pleasing her in-laws, taking care of her husband and looking after our child she has done it all so far with ease. Add to it teaching students in college, operating on a daily basis and listening to disgruntled patients…… definitely ain’t a joke!

This blog post is a small dedication to my wife and also to so many other women all around including my mom who don so many different hats with ease. They say that the man is head of the family but its also true that a woman is the neck which guides the head and thereby each and every member of the family. A woman, after spending much of her life as a daughter and a sister, gives up her home and leaves her parents and siblings behind to start a new life (sometimes with a stranger as in arranged marriages) It’s a sacrifice that is unimaginable for most men and something which we don’t seem to understand or appreciate most of the times. “Being a woman is a terribly difficult task, since it consists principally in dealing with men” said Joseph Conrad which is so damn true! They say that whatever a man does , a woman has to do twice as better to get half the appreciation, that’s because our society is such. Lets appreciate the women who do it all!A daughter AND a sister AND a wife AND a mother AND a career…… There’s nothing a woman cant do!
